Venus Williams

The only American still playing in Flushing meadows is Venus Wiliams who headed into the semi finals after edging out Italian, Francesca Schiavone 7-6(5), 6-4. Wiliams’ next opponent in the semis will be last year’s winner, Kim Clijsters. Earlier on, fellow American Sam Querrey fell to Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka.

There will be a sequel to last year’s semi final match between Williams and Clijsters when the pair meets again in the semis of the US open scheduled for Friday.

Spain will be divided when two of its citizens Fernando Verdasco and Rafael Nadal meet in the quarter finals of the men’s tournament.

America’s male representatives in the US have all been bundled out of the competition and the last one to go out was Sam Querrey after his dream of making it to the quarterfinals was ended abruptly from another Swiss player and not the famous Roger Federer. This had been the second time a Swiss player had edged out an American in the tournament.

Tuesday was full of strong winds which made it difficult for many of the players as the direction of the tennis balls became unpredictable. World number 3 Venus Williams last won the US open in 2001 and even though her Italian competitor was quite intelligent, the 30 year old American did enough to edge past her in almost 2 hours of game time.

World number 2 Kim Clijsters, last year’s winner came into the match as the clear favorite and did enough to advance to the next round at the expense of world number 5 Samantha Stosur after beating her 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Clijsters seems to be on top of Williams in recent times after triumphing over her in their last four times. They have however won against each other 6 times after 12 meetings. Clijsters beat Williams 6-0, 0-6, 6-4 in the fourth round of the US Open 2009.

World number 8 Verdasco unbelievably beat his compatriot David Ferrer 5-7, 7-6,(8), 6-3, 6-3, 7-6(4) after coming from two straight set losses. This was the longest match of Ferrer’s career and it lasted 4 hours 23 minutes.

Reigning world number one, Rafael Nadal didn’t have a difficult match. He edged past Feliciano Lopez ranked number 23 in the world 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the next round.
Sam Querrey had the opportunity to qualify into the quarter final for the first time but failed to take the opportunity to beat Stanislas Wawrinka in a match that ended 7-6(9), 6-7(5), 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in favor of the Swiss.
