Schmidt: 200,000 Android phones are sold every day
Google CEO Eric Schmidt claimed yesterday (Wednesday) at Lake Tahoe technology conference that 200 thousand Android-based phones are sold every day. Google’s Mobile OS, was the most sold OS during the last quarter
Google CEO Eric Schmidt claims 200,000 smart phones and other devices based on Google’s operating system, Android, are sold every day. He expects that revenues from search advertising regarding mobile phones will overtake that of Google searches regarding computers – but did not predict when that would happen.
“It looks like Android is not just a phenomenon, but its growth rate is a phenomenon,” Schmidt told reporters at the technology at Lake Tahoe, California yesterday (Wednesday).
Smart phones running on Android OS were the leading phones sold in the United States in the second quarter, according to research firm NPD. Android runs on a third of all phones sold between April and June, when RIM’s BlackBerry dropped to second place with 28 percent for the first time since 2007 and the iPhone to third place with 22 percent.
Android is currently running on a number of manufacturers phones, including Motorola Ahdroid – which was the best selling Android phone during the second quarter, and on HTC’s phones. According to Schmidt, Android will run on many other manufacturers phones.
