Nokia is renewing Symbian
Symbian has a new version and along with it Nokia is launching two new phones: the first a corporate phone and the second for multimedia applications.
Nokia does not forget the Symbian. In an event held in London yesterday, the company revealed two new smartphones that use the veteran OS as well as giving Symbian itself a face lift. This is not a change in strategy- the company still plans on focusing on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.
The E6 is the heir to the E71 and E72 – a cellular for businessmen with a full physical keyboard. It also has a relatively small touch screen, sized 2.46 inch (480×640 resolution), 8GB internal memory, strong battery (1500mAh) Wi-Fi connectivity and an 8mp camera. The device will be launched during the second quarter of the year and its European price will be Euro 340.
The X7 is a new phone in Nokia’s multimedia series – the first with a 4 inch AMOLED touch screen (360×640 resolution). It is also equipped with an 8mp camera and 8GB of memory. Unlike the E6 the battery is 1200mAh, and Nokia promise 4.5 hours of conversation on 3G networks or 450 stand by hours. It will also be launched during the current quarter and cost Euro 380.
Along with the new hardware, Nokia is launching Symbian Anna, the new version of Symbian 3 intended for the company’s touch devices. The new system displays a renewed interface and a number of improvements. Thus finally a full keyboard interface can be seen when the phone is horizontal as well as a split screen when typing text. Nokia also promise a faster browser.
The new system will be launched in the two phones mentioned above and in the future will arrive onto older models, N8, C6-01, iC7 , E7 – Nokia are not ready to commit to launch dates beyond saying “in the coming months”.
