iPad? iPed is Here
Apple’s iPad was only released a few weeks ago in April of 2010 to great success. The company saw thousands of sales during the first day alone. Now Apple has reportedly sold over two million iPads. The device has three different levels of storage capacity, and it can cost anywhere from around $500 to over $800 depending on storage size and whether it has 3G.
Now, other technology companies are trying to gain some of Apple’s success, and many of them are manufacturing and releasing similar tablet devices.
For example, over the weekend, a new product was released in China. It is called the iPed, and it is reportedly a knock off of the much better known iPad. This product is supposedly manufactured by a company called Orphan Electronics, and they offer the iPed for only $150, which is much less expensive than the iPad. However, it has been reported that the device is only available for purchase in China.
The iPed reportedly has 16 gigabytes of storage and 1 gigabyte of RAM, which is even more RAM than the base level iPad. It also supposedly has a 600-MHz processor. The iPad has a 1 GHz processor. The iPed also has a slightly smaller screen than the iPad, which has an almost 10 inch screen. Its screen is only around 7 inches. The device reportedly runs Android 1.5, which is Google’s operating system.
Other companies have also mentioned that they are working on similar devices recently, and many of them were unveiled at Computex, which is also known as the Taipei International Information Technology Show. For example, Asustek said they will soon release a new product called the Eee Pad. They were the first company to release the netbook.
The Eee Pad is a touch screen tablet that will run Windows 7. The device reportedly has a ten hour battery life and will run off Intel processors. They are saying that they will release a 12 inch version that can be attached to a keyboard. It apparently attaches with a hinge for the times when a tablet needs a keyboard. Asustek is also developing an application store with Intel. The company reported that they will begin selling the device early next year for approximately $400.
At this rate, these new tablets might become the new personal computer, overtaking the laptop. They might take over the computer world the way laptops did when they were originally introduced.
