Google acquires Slide: on the path to social network?
The search giant purchased the leisure games company .The assessment is that Google is working to establish a games based social network, that is going to be called Google Me. The company has not yet responded to the rumors.
Google confirmed this week that it acquired Slide, a developer of Recreational Games and accompanying services for social networks.
PC World website reported yesterday (Sunday) ,that this reinforced the assessment that Google is planning to enter the social media market – with a games based service. According to some estimates, Google’s service is expected to be called Google Me.
Google had already put her hand in social media, with the launch of Orkut in 2004. This is a social network resembling MySpace in terms of the options presented, and is still very popular in India and Brazil even in the era of Facebook. Orkut was also popular in Iran, before being blocked by the government. Google has developed and improved Orkut, but not pushed it successfully forward in other countries. This caused surprise in light of the staggering success of Facebook.
This last year revealed some evidence that suggests that Google is getting back into social media. Google launched Buzz, a network similar to the structure of updates on Facebook which was a significant step. However, the launch provoked criticism among Gmail users since Google exposed their private information without authorization in the Service.
During May it was reported that Google is looking to fill the position of director of social media. According to GigaOm, the company hired a senior human resources recruiter for the position. However, the site states that Google may prefer to buy an existing social network than to build one herself.
The name Google Me originated in a Twitter twittered by Digg founder, Kevin Rose. According to him a reliable source close to the subject leaked the very existence of a new social project by Google. Google UK CEO Matt Britin gave an interview in July to the telegraph and refused to deny or confirm the existence of the Google Me project. In the last month it has been gleaned that Google has had contacts with various games companies including EA and Zinga, the developers of the popular game Farmville. It also turned to other popular games companies like Playfish.
One can see that despite gathering evidence, there is no unequivocal proof of the existence of Google Me. Google may build a social network model different from that of Facebook. On Zuckerberg’s social network people communicate with each other, share content, and the games are a bonus service, that not everyone does. Google may choose to place the games in the center, and attract their users – as social interaction and sharing content will be something less central: the opposite model than Facebook.
Equally, Google may aspire to develop an online games service, to coordinate content from leading games. Currently, the Internet giant keeps all the cards close to its chest, and did not respond to the rumors.
