Apple: new Macbook Air computers
Apple introduces two new MacBook Air computers influenced by the iPad, and even promises an new OS in the summer and a Mac applications store.
Apple held a “Back to the Mac” event yesterday, where it revealed new Mac models and other computer innovations.
The two new MacBook Air computers were defined by Steve Jobs as “What happens when a MacBook meets an iPad”. As the followers of the original MacBook Air, they are extra slim – 1.7cm at the thickest point, 0.27cm thinner and they weight 1.3kg. the two models include a 11.6inches and 13.3inches screens, both have Duo2core intel processors and Nvidia Geforce screen cards. Both notably do not include a CE drive. The new MacBook Air models are available at a starting price of $1,000 (11.6inches screen with 1.4 GHz process and 128GB storage) up to $1,600 (13inches screen 1.86GHz processor and 256GB storage).
Apple also revealed, for the first time, the next version for the Mac, the Lion OSX. According to Jobs while developing the new OS Apple was inspired by the iPad. Thus for example, the Lion supports multi touch, although it is only done with the mouse. Apple does not intend on manufacturing touch screen computers.
Another characteristic drawn from the iPhone and iPad devices to the Mac is the applications store, which will be very similar to the successful iPhone and iPad store. Paid or free applications will be available for installation in one click. Lion OSX will be launched in the summer of 2011, but the applications store should open in three months. Developers can submit applications to the store in November.
Another innovation shown at the event was the Mac FaceTime software. A video program parallel to the one included in the new iPad and iphones, where you can make calls from computer to computer or iPhone to computer and vice versa. The software is available to download in beta version – an unusual strategy for Apple, which doesn’t usually release beta versions.
