Apple’s social network: A disaster

Apple

A million users connected to Ping, the new music social network but so far only complaints can be heard.

Among the innovations they announced by Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs during the event that was held on Wednesday came the announcement of “Ping” – a new musical social network built-in to the iTunes software. Yesterday, Apple released that the social network reached one million registered users in two days – and yet the company has very little celebrate on this subject: the social network receives critical reviews.

In recent days some of the most influential technological blogs, including TechCrunch and AllthingsD, issued posts criticizing Ping and counting its disadvantages.

Some of the most common claims against Ping were:

  • Network users can share, rate and monitor their music – but only the actual songs they buy on iTunes. There is no way to share or comment on the music that already exists on the users’ player – unlike many other existing networks.
  • You can follow registered artists (such as Lady Gaga, U2 or Katy Perry), but very few artists are active.
  • During the Initial registration the user is asked to select genres of his favorite music, but the list of genres is very limited (the list does not include, for example, metal, punk or folk) and users are limited, for some reason to three genres only.
  • As usual with Apple, the network is a “closed garden” and does not communicated with other social networks or other sites – you can’t advertise through it as you can, for example, through Facebook or Twitter updates. The only way to network is through iTunes
  • .

  • In addition to all these problems, the network was filled on its first day with spam and scammers that flooded the network with links to questionable sites.
  • The result of all these is that many are asking “What is it good for”. The network seems like a failure for Apple.
